Heating your pool can be extremely expensive if not done correctly. How can you keep your heating costs down and the most efficient they can be?
The key to this is making sure that your pool heating system is the best suited to the size of your swimming pool and how warm you wish to heat it. Having a heat pump that is too small, will mean it will need to work very hard to get up to temperature and stay there, using a lot of energy. Inefficient heat pumps use more energy to produce less heat.
The other way to make your pool heating system the most efficient it can be, is to use a pool cover. Not only do pool covers reduce the amount of heat that escapes from the water’s surface, most importantly, they reduce the amount of evaporation that occurs to negligible amounts. Water evaporation accounts for 70% of heat loss from your pool. If warm water doesn’t evaporate, you require less energy to heat the pool and the new water added.
The last way you can reduce your pool heating costs is by reducing the temperature that you are heating your pool to. A change of even 1 degree can offer noticeable savings to your heating costs.

Do you have a spa pool that needs heating? Has your current spa pool heater stopped working, or are you wanting to make your current heating system more efficient? Pool Heating Ltd can help you to achieve these goals.
At Pool Heating Ltd, we are experts at heating spa pools. Heating a spa pool is no different to heating a swimming pool, except that, generally, a spa pool holds a lot less water. Because spas do hold less water, they need a smaller pool heater than a swimming pool, and usually are between 1.5kW and 6kW in size.
Pool Heating Ltd look forward to assisting you in finding the best heating solution for your spa pool. Not only do we supply both commercial and residential spa pool heating systems, we also install them, providing you with professional service from start to finish.
This is a question asked by many people when searching for a pool heating solution. There is no one size fits all solution. What determines the size you need is the size of the pool to be heated, the temperature you wish the pool to be heated to, and the outside temperature or climate.
Choosing a pool heater that is too small results in it being overworked, as it constantly needs to run to try and heat the pool to the correct temperature, rarely succeeding in doing so. Not only will you end up with a cooler pool than you wish, but you’ll also receive a very hefty energy bill too.
No one wants an inefficient and costly pool heating solution!
Selecting a correctly sized pool heater will result in the heater working within its limits, not only lengthening its life, but also drastically reducing the running costs.
Pool Heating Ltd are experts at pool heating. We can recommend a pool heating solution that fits your pool requirements, leaving you with peace of mind knowing that the solution provided will be the best, and most efficient, for your needs.
Out of the range of pool heating systems available, including solar and gas, why is it that you may choose a heat pump as your pool heating solution?
Heat Pumps are the most popular form of pool heating. This is as a result of their ease of use, and relatively low installation costs.
So, how do they compare with Solar and Gas pool heating solutions?
Solar Pool Heating
Solar heating relies on the sun. So, although solar heating can easily heat your pool in summer as well as the late months of spring and early months of autumn, in winter the suns position in the sun is a lot lower, and as a result, the number of sunlight hours, and the suns strength is reduced. Also, winter tends to be rainy and cloudy in many parts of the country. As a result, in winter, you will struggle to heat your pool with a solar heating system.
Gas Pool Heating
A Gas powered pool heating system is generally less to install in the first instance, but costs more to run and maintain. Unless you live in an area with reticulated LPG, you will need to rely on gas bottles, which if they run out, may have a few days wait until they can be refilled. What’s more, the maintenance costs on a gas system are higher, and the ongoing costs equate to an annual increase in heating costs of around $1300 – $1800 per year, depending on which area you live in (the colder the outside air temperature, the more you need to heat your pool, and thus great savings are seen in areas of colder temperatures).
Heat Pump Pool Heating
The main positives of Heat Pump pool heating, is they can be used year round, regardless of the weather. Also, they are far more energy efficient than Gas powered pool heating solutions. Maintenance of the system is relatively easy and cost efficient, and a good system should last 10 years.
If you are wanting to heat your swimming pool year round, then a heat pump is the best heating solution for your swimming pool.
What one should I use, you ask? There are many factors that influence what pool heat pump is best for your pool, including the surface area of the pool, what the average temperature is during your coldest months, and the temperature you wish to heat your pool.

Do you have a school, hotel, or other form of commercial pool that needs heating? Perhaps your swimming pool is one of the major attractions of your business, and need it to be heated throughout the year.
You will require a commercial solution to heating your pool, as it needs to be powerful enough to handle the task of heating a large volume of water.
Pool Heating Ltd have a range of commercial pool heating options available, however, there is a range that outperforms the others, in our opinion. Performance + heat pumps live up to their name! Performance + are engineered and build in New Zealand, to specifically cope with our variable climate. They range in size from 7kW for smaller pools and spas, right through to 140kW – capable of heating the largest commercial pools.
Pool Heating Ltd take selecting the correct pool heater for your pool very seriously! We understand that it must be reliable and efficient, so your customers aren’t left without the use of the pool, due to breakdowns or the inability to meet heating demand.
Selecting the right size pool heater is the key to this. Some of the things that need to be considered when selecting the correct size pool heater are:
Size of the pool
Surface area of the water
Temperature you wish the water to be
The average coldest temperature
The number of hours a day your pool is operational
The climate
The amount, and speed, of wind in your area
We have a handy online calculator that is able to calculate what size pool heater you will need, taking into consideration the size, climate and your other requirements. However, if you still need assistance, or prefer to speak to one of our team, we are happy to help you with your selection.

As the cold of winter approaches, you may be looking at ways to save money on your pool heating costs. Pool heating can become expensive when not carried out correctly.
You may be asking, “What can I do to save on heating my pool this winter?”
The number one thing that you can do is invest in a pool cover. Although they provide huge savings in energy costs, they are regularly overlooked by owners when installing their pool heating system.
How do pool covers provide financial benefits?
They reduce the amount of heat lost off the water’s surface, by providing an insulated barrier, reducing heat energy transfer to the colder air.
They reduce the amount of evaporation that occurs to virtually nothing. 70% of the heat lost from a pool occurs due to water evaporation.
Both of these things result in less energy needing to be used to maintain the pools temperature, however, the stopping of evaporation provides the biggest savings to energy costs.
An added benefit of pool covers, is they reduce the amount of leaves, dust and debris that enter and pollute the water. This also significantly reduces the amount of pool cleaning you will need to do, and the amount of chemicals required to treat the pool. A win – win situation!

As with all mechanical and electrical systems, occasionally pool heating systems can develop issues and cease working. Are you currently experiencing operating issues with your pool heater? Below are some helpful hints to try, in the event you find your pool heating solution is not working.
The heater won’t turn on/stay on
Clean your filter, then turn the thermostat and try turning on your heater again.
Blocked filters result in a huge reduction to water pressure, causing the pressure switch turning the heater off. Take this opportunity to also check that the shut off valves are open, and that the electrical connections are tight and free of corrosion.
Your heater is making strange noises
Dirt and debris becoming stuck in hoses and pipes, is the number one cause of heaters making weird noises. Backflush the filter to get rid of any blockages and check the hoses and pipes again. If the noise continues turn of the pump. If the noise is still evident once the pump is off, then your pressure switch is most likely the culprit, and will need replacing.
At this stage, we recommend you turn off your heater and call a professional in, so as to properly diagnose the issue.
Not heating properly or low water pressure
The first thing to do in this instance is to check that the timer is set properly. If it is fine, then check your filter to see if it is blocked.
If neither the timer, nor filter, is the issue, check all valves, ensuring they are all turned to go through the heater.

One of the most important aspects of pool maintenance is to make sure your pool filter is changed on time. Pool filters are an important part of keeping your pool clean, as well as ensuring the water pressure remains within the correct range.
How do you know when your pool filter needs to be changed, though?
All types of pool filters have a recommended life. They are:
Sand: 7-10 years
Cartridge: 2-5 years
Grid: 7-10 years
Sometimes filters need to be changed earlier than this though, due to a number of things. If you don’t use a pool cover, more debris and dust will enter the pool and thus need to be filtered out. The more dust and debris, the quicker your filter will clog and need to be replaced.
So, you may ask, how will I know if my pool filter needs to be replaced? If, after checking your pool chemical levels, your pool is cloudy, or it has a lot of debris always present, you have low pressure coming out of the inlet valves, or the filter is clogging, this will point to the need to replace your filter.
At Pool Heating we are happy to help you with all your filter needs. Contact us on 0800 766 543 today to speak one of our friendly team.
No doubt you are asking, what is a Pool Heating Exchanger?
A heat exchange is a device that allows the heat from one gas or liquid to move to another, without those two substrates ever actually touching or mixing. It is a go-between as such. It transfers the heat without transferring the gas or fluid that carries the heat.
Pool heat exchangers provide an economical and efficient alternative to heating your pool, as it reduces the need for direct energy input to heat the pool water. It is referred to as indirect heating.
So, what are some of the heat sources you could use, to provide heat to your pool via a Pool Heat Exchanger?
The first one in Solar Panels. A heat exchanger is required to transfer the heat energy from the liquid in the solar panels, to the water in the pool.
The next few are not so obvious. Do you use a gas fire, wood burner or pellet fire in your home? All of these are great to partner with a pool heat exchanger. Many models of these fires allow for wetback, which means that as your fire is heating your home, water is also being heated. This boiling water then passes through the pool heat exchanger, heating the pool water.
In winter, outdoor pools with pool covers, generally lose between 1-2°C per day, if the pool is insulated. A smaller pool heat exchanger (40kW) can raise the temperature of a 70m3 pool by 0.5°C per hour. This means that by using your fire for 2-4 hrs per day, you can keep your pool heated to a comfortable temperature in the colder months.
The size of the heat exchanger you need, depends on both the size of your pool and the temperature you wish to heat it to.
