Is a Pool Cover Worth the Investment?
Have you seen a pool cover on a friend’s or commercial pool? No doubt you are aware that they help to regulate your pools temperature, but you may wonder, are they really worth the investment? The simple answer is Yes!
How do pool covers work? Pool covers sit on the surface of the water, providing an insultated barrier between the warm water and the cool air above. This drastically reduces the heat transfer between the two, resulting in a warmer pool which requires less effort to heat, further resulting in a reduction in heating costs.

However, the biggest energy loss that occurs with swimming pools is via evaporation. Evaporation accounts for 70% of heat loss from a swimming pool.
What is interesting to note is that it takes 2.3 Kilojoules of heat to raise the temperature of 1l of water by ½ a degree Celcius. However, each litre of 26.5°C water that evaporates results in a loss of 2430 Kilojoules of heat
Using a pool cover, when the pool is not in use, is the single most effective way of reducing your pool heating costs, as evaporation virtually ceases to occur.
Furthermore, there are different types of pool cover types. Some are designed to heat the pool by allowing the use of solar energy. These covers not only trap the heat in, but help to reduce your heating costs by harnessing the free energy the sun provides.
The cost of investing in a pool cover is far outweighed by the benefits you reap in having a warmer pool, and significantly less ongoing energy costs for the 10-12 year life of the Pool Cover.
Would you like to have a warmer pool, but with significantly less heating costs? If the answer is yes, then a pool cover really is worth the investment!

Using a pool cover hugely reduces the amount of heat lost from a pool, as it sits on the surface of the water (or just above) keeping the heat energy where it should be. It acts as a layer of insulation, stopping the heat of the water from being absorbed by the cooler air surrounding it.  This is known as heat transfer.  For naturally heated pools and pools with manmade pool heating solutions, it means that the pool can be kept warm for longer, without the need for further heating. It also results in keeping energy costs down for electrical and gas powered pool heating solutions by reducing the amount of energy required to reheat your pool every time you wish to use it.
