It acts as a layer of insulation, stopping the heat of the water from being absorbed by the cooler air surrounding it.  This is known as heat transfer.  For naturally heated pools and pools with manmade pool heating solutions, it means that the pool can be kept warm for longer, without the need for further heating. It also results in keeping energy costs down for electrical and gas powered pool heating solutions by reducing the amount of energy required to reheat your pool every time you wish to use it.
